Fitbit

Fitbit's shares plunged following the announcement of its first colour smartwatch at the CES tech show.
The San Francisco-based company's stock fell more than 18%.

That suggests investors were disappointed with its decision to take on more capable Android and Apple-powered watches by selling its own device at a cheaper price.
Huawei, Misfit and Withings were among other big brands to unveil new wearables at the Las Vegas show.

How to miss, big style, your target audience

Sainsbury's cast the much-loved children's book character Mog as the star of its Christmas campaign, whilst John Lewis unveiled a tear-jerking story of a young girl trying to send a message to a lonely man on the moon. But whilst the big high street retailers battle it out for the fuzziest festive ad out there, House of Fraser decided to rebel.

The store's campaign, which is called 'Your Christmas Your Rules', aims to offer a refreshing antidote to the festive fuzzy norm with an unapologetic message all about challenging tradition and banishing the bland. Inspired by the notion that the best Christmases come with people’s own traditions, the advert flips convention on its head with a series of audacious and fashionable alternatives. Made with creative agency 18 Feet & Rising, the high-energy, hip hop style ad is set to the track ‘You Don’t Own Me’, sung by up-and-coming artist Grace, featuring G-Eazy.

That's the spiel - it's a great ad - but it's a terrible ad for House of Fraser. This advert could be for GAP or River Island or some funky store possibly NEXT but House of Fraser sorry, no.

John Lewis Christmas advert: Who is Moon Hitler?

Moon Kampf. Shameless pinched from the Guardian

Why has the old man been sent into space? Is he a war criminal? `

How come he’s on the moon? That’s probably the first question you asked yourself upon seeing the new John Lewis advert this morning. Well, maybe not the first – that was either “What sort of little girl owns such a powerful telescope?” or “How is he still alive without any oxygen? Shouldn’t his skull have exploded in a huge arc of bone and gore the second he took his helmet off, like that bit in Total Recall?” – but it’s likely to be the one that stuck with you.

Clearly, the answer is that the old man is a monster. That’s the only logical explanation. Napoleon only got exiled to a Mediterranean island, for crying out loud, and he was Napoleon. But this guy has literally been jettisoned to the moon. He is hundreds of thousands of miles away from the nearest human. What could he possibly have done to warrant such punishment?

How many people must he have killed? How many lives must have been crushed into nothing under his vicious boot? Is he a war criminal? Is that it? Is he Hitler? Is this whole advert just a berserk wish-fulfilment fantasy about how the international community should have treated Hitler if they had caught him before he killed himself? If that’s the case – as I strongly suggest it is – the advert’s slogan probably should have been revised from “Show Someone They’re Loved This Christmas” to “Don’t Give Balloons To Moon Hitler, You Idiot”.

Even though this reading of the advert is absolutely spot-on, John Lewis could have saved any potential misunderstanding by just reining it in a bit. Because until now, even at their most avant-garde, the store’s Christmas adverts have always somehow managed to be about John Lewis. There was the advert where a woman aged gracefully, surrounded by John Lewis products. You could reasonably infer that the little boy who couldn’t wait to give his parents their Christmas present bought it from John Lewis.

The snowman who somehow gained sentience in a horrifying moment of God-defying witchery still physically ended up in a branch of John Lewis. If you visited John Lewis after watching the penguin advert last year, what could you buy? That’s right, a penguin. There’s none of that this year. Does John Lewis sell telescopes powerful enough to scan the moon for individual human beings? No. Does John Lewis stock cuddly toys shaped like brokenhearted old men whose milky eyes are full of regret for the atrocities they have definitely committed? No. Not a single frame of this advert is even tangentially related to John Lewis.

Things desperately need to be brought back down to earth next year. Part of me hopes that the big 2016 John Lewis advert is just the guy from the Safestyle double glazing ads standing in a branch of John Lewis shouting “BUY YOUR MUM A KETTLE” over and over again. Because otherwise, at this rate, next year’s advert will be the story of an alcoholic carrot or a plasticine spaniel with abandonment issues or just a damp napkin with a frowny emoji drawn on it, and it’ll be three times longer than it needs to be, and it’ll cost the equivalent of Portugal’s GDP to make, and it’ll be soundtracked by a melancholy plinky-plonk cover of the Big Break theme tune, and we’ll have to go through this palaver all over again. I’m not sure I’ve got the patience for that.

At least the little girl bought him a telescope, though. She could have bought him food, or a companion, or a ticket back to Earth. But no, she bought a telescope, dooming him to spend the rest of his miserable life watching everyone else have much more fun than him. What a fist to the face. Take that, Moon Hitler.

Facebook rolls out live streaming video service

Facebook has begun rolling out a new feature on its social network which allows users to stream live video. A select group of celebrities and high profile users have been able to use the service for several months.

Live streaming via mobile phones has become one of the big technology trends of the year, with Twitter-owned Periscope and Meerkat proving popular. Last year, Amazon paid $1bn for live streaming game site Twitch.

Initially Facebook's live video feature will be available only to a small percentage of people in the US and will be limited to iPhones. The tech giant said that "over time, the company plans to bring it to all users" but it did not give specific timescales.

Setting up a company in Rugby

A ‘LACK of support’ means almost a fifth of new businesses in Rugby do not survive to see their second birthday, according to a national debt charity. New figures published by the Office of National Statistics revealed that 19 per cent of new businesses set up in Rugby do not last until their second year, with three per cent winding up in their first year.
Start up company Rugby

605 new businesses were set up in Rugby last year – a similar figure to the previous year. But at the same time, a total of 405 businesses closed down in 2014. Business Debtline, run by the Money Advice Trust, warned there is a ‘lack of support’ available to help new ventures take their first steps in business. The charity said this gap in support means many small business owners are not given the skills and know-how they need to get their company off the ground.

Nick Price Creatives help new businesses in Rugby with creative solutions to their branding, online presence and marketing backed up with a sensible, realistic approach. If you are in the Rugby area and are thinking about setting up a company contact Nick Price Creatives today.

Yahoo blocks email

Yahoo has confirmed that it is preventing some people from accessing their email if they are using ad-blocking software in their browser. Some users in the US reported that Yahoo Mail was displaying a message asking them to disable their ad-blocker before they could access their inbox. Yahoo said it was testing a "new product experience" in the US.

Ad-blocking has proved to be controversial and technology companies have responded in different ways. In September, Apple updated its mobile operating system iOS to allow third-party ad-blockers to be installed - although they do not remove Apple's own ads which it serves up in apps. Google meanwhile has introduced a paid subscription version of YouTube, that lets viewers remove ads on the video streaming site for a monthly fee.

Ad-blocking advocates say disabling advertisements can improve smartphone battery life and reduce mobile data usage. It can also prevent people being tracked by advertisers online and protect devices from malware that could be served up if an advertising network is compromised. In 2014, Yahoo admitted adverts on its homepage had been infected with malware for four days. But the company currently relies on advertising to earn money from its Yahoo Mail service which is available to use for free.

Google offers YouTube copyright support

YouTube owner Google says it will help fund up to $1m (£650,000) in legal fees for some content creators who have received copyright takedown notices. It will step in if it feels their material is considered to be fair use. However the firm admitted that only a handful of people have been chosen to benefit from this support. Copyright holders are able to make requests to Google - or other sites - to take down content under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).

However there are exceptions to the law, which vary around the world but can include the use of other material for the purposes of commentary and parody. If a small portion of somebody else's work is used in this context, or in news reporting or for teaching purposes in the US, it can be exempt from copyright legislation.

No Black Friday!

Supermarket Asda says it will not take part in the shopping discount day known as Black Friday, which it helped to bring to the UK just two years ago.

The supermarket says "shopper fatigue" has set in "around flash sales on big-ticket, non-essential items at Christmas". The event marks the beginning of the Christmas shopping season in the US. Black Friday is not universally popular with retailers but experts were divided over whether others would follow Asda.

Last year, police were called in to supermarkets as scuffles broke out among shoppers vying to get the best deal.

Argos apologises after website goes offline

Argos has apologised after its website was offline for several hours.

The site is now back after what is believed to have been an internal fault affecting the site on Sunday. Separately, the company said it was aware of people receiving scam emails masquerading as having been sent from Argos. The company advises customers not to hand over personal details after receiving unsolicited emails. It said it had not suffered a cyber attack.

Argos said in a statement on Sunday: "We are extremely sorry for the temporary service issues our customers were experiencing on our website this afternoon. "We have identified and fixed the issue and our site is now up and running.

"We apologise to any customer who has tried to contact us unsuccessfully today and we are working to respond to all enquiries as soon as we can." Last year, Argos's website suffered problems for two days following a revamped design of the site. It displayed an error message on some computers, but not others, saying access had been blocked because of a "high volume of visitors".

The Sun Scraps Online Payment

The Sun will scrap the paywall on its website just over two years after it was introduced.

Rebekah Brooks, chief executive of Sun owner News UK, told staff in an email it would make its online stories "largely free" by the end of November. She said the plan would add readers. The Sun first started charging customers £2 a week in August 2013. Other newspapers charging for access include News UK's Times newspapers and the Financial Times.

Ms Brooks rejoined Rupert Murdoch's News UK in September a year after she was cleared of conspiracy to hack voicemails, conspiracy to pay public officials and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. She replaced Mike Darcey, who had previously worked for BSkyB. The Sun was first moved behind a paywall in August 2013, although its sister paper the Times made the change in July 2010, when Ms Brooks was in charge of the parent company. It was the only one of the tabloids to charge for online content.

Facebook 'Others' Folder

There has been a mixed reaction to Facebook's changes to its Messenger service, announced this week.

In the next few days it will phase out the Other inbox, where members currently receive messages from people they are not Facebook friends with. Some members have expressed concern about harassment and spam gaining increased visibility.

Facebook users who run groups are also affected as they often communicate with group members who are not friends. Once the phasing is complete, all messages from people outside of a member's friend network will arrive as "requests" which the recipient can accept or reject.

A service is being held at London's St Paul's Cathedral, attended by David Cameron and Labour's new leader Jeremy Corbyn.

The battle, in the summer of 1940, was a pivotal moment in UK history. A range of events have already been staged over the past few months to mark the aerial battle, which raged between July and October 1940 as Germany attempted to destroy the fighting capacity of the RAF.

New Google Logo

Google has unveiled a new logo for its core search services.

The change smoothes out some of the features in the letters that make up the well-known colourful logo spelling out its name. It said the change was needed because people were now reaching Google on lots of mobile devices rather than just desktop computers. The change comes after Google put its many divisions under an umbrella company called Alphabet. It said that the logo, and its many variations, would work better on the many different-sized screens through which people used or encountered Google and its services.

As well as the full logo of the company's name, it also plans to use four dots in its signature blue, red, yellow and green colours and a single, multi-coloured capital "G" to represent it. Google announced the change on its official blog and illustrated what was different via a series of animated gifs. It said the revamped logo was "simple, uncluttered, colorful, friendly" and represented the best of Google.

Is Beijing's Winter Olympics 2022 song a Frozen rip off?

From smartphones to designer handbags to cars even, counterfeiting has long been a part of Chinese industry, where trademarks can be a slippery concept.

But a new accusation of intellectual borrowing has the potential to cause embarrassment at the highest levels. Keen (and not-so-keen) listeners have noticed that Beijing's Winter Olympics song sounds suspiciously like a runaway hit from the Disney musical Frozen.

Beijing was awarded the 2022 games despite the city's lack of snow.

Chinese business magazine Caijing Online, cited by the New York Times, analysed the instrumentation in the songs and said they had similar prelude chords and an eight-beat introduction, and run at almost exactly the same tempo.

The New York Times approached both the Beijing Games' organising committee and Disney but both declined to comment. The Oscar-winning Frozen is the biggest animated feature of all time, having taken more than $1.3 bn (£790m) at the box office worldwide.

Google+ Failed?

Create a social network or risk everything. That was the original pitch for Google's Facebook rival, Google+, a refrain hammered over and over by the social network's chief architect, Vic Gundotra, in meetings with the company's top brass.

Google's effort to build a social network to rival Facebook began with a bold, company-wide yell. Now Google appears to be winding down Google+ with barely a whimper.

Google launched Plus without a clear plan to differentiate the service from Facebook. It bet on a charismatic leader with a flawed vision, ignored troubling indications about the social network's traction (or lack thereof) with users and continued throwing features at the wall long after many had written Google+ off for dead.

The slow demise of Google+ sheds light on how a large technology company tries and often fails to innovate when it feels threatened. The Google+ project did lead to inventive new services and created a more cohesive user identity that continues to benefit Google, but the social network itself never truly beat back existing rivals. Facebook is now larger than ever, with 1.4 billion users and a market capitalization more than half of Google's. It continues to poach Google employees. Facebook and Twitter are also slowly chipping away at Google's dominance in display ad revenue.

King Digital, candy crush makers shares slide

Shares of the maker of popular mobile game Candy Crush fell as much as over 14% in after hours trading after it warned of weaker profits. King Digital said it expects fluctuations in foreign currency and a lack of new releases to hold back its earnings in the current quarter.

The big drop in its shares came despite the release of first quarter sales figures that beat market expectations. The firm has been struggling to increase market share. King Digital's revenue fell 6.1% to $569.5m (£361m) in the first three months of the year from a year ago, but that was higher than analysts' forecasts of $563.4m. However, the London-based game maker said its gross bookings, which is what players spend before costs such as app store fees - for the April to June period would be between $490m and $520m - below expectations.

Drones banned in Toyko Parks

Tokyo has banned drones in municipal parks after one was discovered on the roof of the prime minister's residence, according to reports. Japanese media outlets have reported that the devices are no longer allowed in any of the 81 public parks in Japan's capital city. According to the reports, offenders could be fined £265.

The move comes after a drone carrying radioactive material landed on the roof of the prime ministerial residence. A man was arrested over the incident in late April after handing himself in, Tokyo police said. Yasuo Yamamoto, 40, was protesting over the Japanese government's nuclear energy policy. According to The Japan News, Tokyo's metropolitan government said the drones posed a danger to children.

The site reports that officials said they had no intention of imposing the penalty, but that they asked people to comply.

Marketing Works!

Starting from Scratch

Initially there was nothing to go on to promote Whilton Locks Garden Village for the very important run up to Christmas - there were plans, but nothing that could have been used from previous years, no photography or anything. So we started from scratch. The new Ice Rink was going to be larger than the previous year - and real ice as opposed to the plastic sheeting, so we knew we could promote the whole event as 'Bigger, Better and Icy-er' than ever before.
Illustrator Daventry
Character Illustrations

One thing we did know early on was the presents Santa was due to give out from his grotto - they were a brilliant quality present and formed the main characters for the Christmas festivities throughout the site - we could have a monkey ice skating, a bear carrying a Christmas tree and a puppy with his Santa wish list! All these we hand drew the initial characters and coloured them up on system - from which we could use these cute characters for signage, posters, adverts and the website.

It's Easier Online
From the outset we all knew the marketing budget meant there couldn't be large adverts taken out here, there and everywhere and so any promotion had to be innovative enough to ensure potential customers could see what was on offer. We were proactive on Social Media, we sent out mailshots to the database of local existing customers (and encouraged new customers to signup to the database) and we made sure the website was optimised for Christmas, Santas Grotto and Ice Skating. The website itself also featured a secure online booking and payment system developed by Nick Price Creatives.

Our Marketing Works!
Other initiatives included prize draws, a daily online advent calendar promotion loads of other fun and games throughout the Christmas period, so much so thanks to many of these initiatives Whilton Locks Garden Village had their busiest ever day in terms of both footfall and revenue in the first week of December, then smashing that record the weekend before Christmas. Everyone involved was very pleased indeed!

Marketing - Brazen

Being creative, pushing the boundaries and enabling a company to promote themselves.

No one could deny the appeal of Frozen throughout 2014 with Disney Frozen toys being some of biggest sellers at Christmas. Each and every year Nick Price Creatives produce a unique marketing promotion on behalf of Daventry company Steam Traction World. The campaign was called Brazen - a wonderfully witty take on a 'typical day at the office.'

Nick Price Creatives came up with the concept, the name 'Brazen', the rewritten words for the song "Do you want to build a Showmans?" and the styling to be used for the Youtube presentation, which would be backed up with both on and offline marketing activity. Each member of staff was illustrated and a brand new character Coalaff, an Olaf-esque homage with the exception of Coalaff being made from coal, before the presentation of storyboards to Steam Traction World.

Daventry Marketing

Once the go-ahead was given, inkeeping with the company image, it was literally full steam ahead. A recording was made of the song. This was edited together with a backing track, the sets were illustrated, the characters animated and a full animated feature was produced in time for a 'premiere' complete with countdown and illustrated characters being unveiled one by one on a red carpet. The Frozen parody was nothing new with Steam Traction World taking on the John Lewis advert the Bear and the Hare the year before with their own delicious twist. Brazen had over 2,500 views on Facebook within the initial 24 hours of launch.

Mr Men

Film rights for the Mr Men and Little Miss characters have been secured by Fox Animation, the studio behind the Ice Age and Rio franchises.

Shawn Levy, who produced and directed the Night at the Museum films starring Ben Stiller, will produce a movie. No director or writer has been announced as yet. The iconic children's books were the creation of Roger Hargreaves, who came up with Mr Tickle when his young son Adam asked what a tickle looked like.

He wrote and illustrated his first book in 1971 and the series went on to feature 85 characters. More than 120 million copies have been sold, with translations in 15 different languages.

In 2011, the rights to Mr Men and Little Miss were acquired by Sanrio Co, Ltd in 2011, the creators of Hello Kitty. Janet Hsu, head of Sanrio, Inc said: "I loved reading these books as a kid, and now I love reading them to my own kids. Their humour, wit and uniquely specific tone make this a truly classic series. I can't wait to help shepherd them to the big screen."

Fox Animation president Vanessa Morrison added: "The Mr Men and Little Miss characters have delighted readers from around the world for decades." The books were previously turned into a children's BBC TV animation between 1974-1985, which was narrated by Dad's Army actor Arthur Lowe When Hargreaves died aged 53 in 1988 following a stroke, his son Adam took over the running of the multi-million pound business.

The Mr Men and Little Miss book titles were sold to entertainment group Chorion in 2004 in a £28m deal. Adam joined the company as a part-time creative consultant. In 2011 he created a new character called Little Miss Princess in time for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Google Glass sales halted but firm says kit is not dead

Google is ending sales of its Google Glass eyewear. The company insists it is still committed to launching the smart glasses as a consumer product, but will stop producing Glass in its present form. Instead it will focus on "future versions of Glass" with work carried out by a different division to before.
The Explorer programme, which gave software developers the chance to buy Glass for $1,500 (£990) will close. The programme was launched in the United States in 2013. It was then opened up to anyone and was launched in the UK last summer. It had been expected that it would be followed reasonably quickly by a full consumer launch. From next week, the search firm will stop taking orders for the product but it says it will continue to support companies that are using Glass.

Samsung forecasts a 37% drop in quarterly profits

Samsung Electronics has forecast a 37.4% fall in quarterly operating profit from a year earlier. In its pre-earnings guidance, the firm forecast an operating profit of 5.2tn Korean won ($4.74bn; £3.14bn) for the three months to December.

Analysts had expected an operating profit guidance of about 5tn won. Shares in the firm, which is the world's largest TV and mobile manufacturer, were up in early morning trade in South Korea on the news. The firm's final fourth-quarter earnings are expected later this month.

“Samsung's new models are basically an improvement of existing products, but they pride themselves on being innovative, so they really have to start focusing on that to stay in the game” Andrew Milroy, Frost & Sullivan

Samsung has been struggling of late against cheaper electronics manufactures, especially in China, which is the world's largest smartphone market. In particular, its flagship Galaxy smartphone line has been losing market share to cheaper models.
