Glitch Causes Items To Be Sold On Amazon For 1p

A software error forces small retailers on Amazon to lose tens of thousands of pounds with some saying it could bankrupt them.

Businesses are furious after a piece of software used by retailers on Amazon went wrong, causing hundreds of items to be sold for 1p. Some firms which use RepricerExpress say they risk going bankrupt because the problem has resulted in them losing so much money.

The software is designed to keep businesses competitive by automatically repricing items of stock so they are cheaper than others in the digital market. The firm states on its website: "We are here to increase your sales on Amazon and Rakuten’s Play.com and make your efforts as profitable as possible."

For an hour on Friday, between 7pm and 8pm, a problem with RepricerExpress led to hundreds of items being sold on Amazon at a fraction of their normal price. At the same time, some customers said, Amazon charged its usual fees for every item sold.

One of the sellers, Judith Blackford of Kiddymania, told Sky News she could be forced out of business as result of the error. She said: "I started using Repricer Express - a repricing tool as did a lot of other businesses a few months ago. "Last night through an error in their programme they listed my stock on Amazon at 1p per item including delivery. "I have lost about £20,000 overnight.

Having asked Amazon to cancel the orders they are still sending them out and charging me horrendous fees. "Surely someone has to be accountable for this. I will be bankrupt at this rate by the end of January."

Senna Toleman For Sale

Ayrton Senna 1983/84 TOLEMAN TG183B - HART TURBO CHASSIS 05
Delivered by Circuit2Circuit

Senna Toleman

PRESS RELEASE

Cars International is proud to represent the unique opportunity to purchase Ayrton Senna's first F1 World Championship points-scoring car.

In this 20th anniversary year of Ayrton Senna's death at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, the three times World Champion is still hailed as one of the greatest Formula 1 Drivers of all time. Cars International are now offering collectors the opportunity to buy into a significant piece of Motor-racing History by owning the very car which launched Ayrton Senna's F1 career, to sit in the seat that Ayrton sat in for his first ever F1 race, and in which he collected his first World Championship points.

The TG183B was designed by Rory Byrne and Pat Symonds for privateer F1 team Toleman. At the time (1983) the team were struggling for results against the manufacture led teams. That was until team MD Alex Hawkridge signed rising star and the then-current F3 Champion 24yr old Ayrton Senna. Senna made his F1 debut with Toleman in this very car, launching both himself and the team into the spotlight within the first two races and marking the start of his F1 career and an icon.

"We couldn't hire a superstar [too expensive] or even a current experienced driver on a minimum retainer – our cars wouldn't get a fair showing in the hands of an average Formula 1 driver,' said Hawkridge in 1990. 'We had to go for young talent. We had to have someone good enough to progress the car, and we knew that Ayrton was capable of doing that.'
SENNA TOLEMAN TG183B

Chassis no.5 made its debut at The Grand Premio do Brazil in Rio De Janeiro, then subsequently Senna & Toleman went on to race the car at the first 4 rounds of the 1984 F1 season including Kyalami where Senna finished a credible 6th scoring his first world championship point. This was followed by Zolder where Senna finished 7th, Senna's final race in TG183B 05 was at the San Marino GP Imola.

The car was then retired and retained by the team until it was sold to the USA and restored in the early 90's by Mike Earl's North American bases team in Los Angeles.

Now repatriated back to the UK, the very same car which launched the F1 career of one of the greatest F1 drivers of all time is now available for sale. With an original Hart Turbo engine, complete with a spare block from Toleman team and full documentation showing unbroken history since it left Toleman establishing the cars provenance and it's unique place in F1 history.

Where can you fly a Drone?

Thousands will receive drones as Christmas presents this year but, as a recent near-miss with an airliner shows, the authorities face a battle to stop them being used irresponsibly. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones have long crossed over from just being used in the military and specialist commercial sphere. They can now be seen in homes.

Remote controlled aircraft used to be a niche hobby. It took time to build them and skill to operate them. Today drones are cheap, quick to get in the air and you can operate them on a smartphone or tablet. Today the thrill is not so much operating a model aircraft as having a flying camera. Across the world, rules are being drawn up or refined to deal with the potential dangers. But they are already being flouted. An unidentified drone came close to hitting an Airbus A320 as it landed at London's Heathrow during the summer.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) sets the rules on drones in the UK under what is called an air navigation order.
An unmanned aircraft must never be flown beyond the normal unaided "line of sight" of the person operating it - this is generally measured as 500m (1,640ft)horizontally or 400ft (122m) vertically
An unmanned aircraft fitted with a camera must always be flown at least 50m (164ft) distance away from a person, vehicle, building or structure
An unmanned aircraft fitted with a camera must not be flown within 150m (492ft) of a congested area or large group of people, such as a sporting event or concert
For commercial purposes, operators must have permission to fly a drone from the CAA

Gangnam Style music video 'broke' YouTube view limit

The music video for South Korean singer Psy's Gangnam Style exceeded YouTube's view limit, prompting the site to upgrade its counter.

YouTube said the video - its most watched ever - has been viewed more than 2,147,483,647 times. It has now changed the maximum view limit to 9,223,372,036,854,775,808, or more than nine quintillion.

Gangnam Style became a worldwide hit when it was released in 2012, largely due to the surreal video.

How do you say 9,223,372,036,854,775,808? Nine quintillion, two hundred and twenty-three quadrillion, three hundred and seventy-two trillion, thirty-six billion, eight hundred and fifty-four million, seven hundred and seventy-five thousand, eight hundred and eight.

Organic molecules detected by Philae

The Philae lander has detected organic molecules on the surface of its comet, scientists have confirmed.

Carbon-containing "organics" are the basis of life on Earth and may give clues to chemical ingredients delivered to our planet early in its history. The compounds were picked up by a German-built instrument designed to "sniff" the comet's thin atmosphere. Other analyses suggest the comet's surface is largely water-ice covered with a thin dust layer.

The European Space Agency (Esa) craft touched down on the Comet 67P on 12 November after a 10-year journey.

Microsoft fixes 19-year-old bug with 'emergency' patch

Microsoft has patched a critical bug in its software that had existed for 19 years. IBM researchers discovered the flaw, which affects Windows and Office products, in May this year - but worked with Microsoft to fix the problem before going public. The bug had been present in every version of Windows since 95, IBM said. Attackers could exploit the bug to remotely control a PC, and so users are being urged to download updates.

Animators face 4K film technology challenge

The advent of 4K and high frame rate films presents a "huge challenge" for studios using computer-based animation, an expert has said. Bruno Mahe, technical head at studio Illumination Mac Guff, said the resolution of animated films would have to be increased by about 2.5 times.

The time required to generate such high-resolution images could hit production schedules. It may mean studios having to re-think the way they make movies, Mr Mahe said. Current animated movies are made to be viewed at 24 frames per second (fps) and at resolutions of about 2K. But the advent of technologies such as 4K and frame rates of 48fps and higher means that the resolution of animated films will have to be substantially increased, said Mr Mahe, whose studio was behind films including The Lorax, Despicable Me and Minions. "They are both going to present a huge challenge," Mr Mahe told the BBC. Simply scaling up existing images to bridge the gap would not work. "That just looks horrible, no-one wants that," he said.

Illumination currently has 20,000 computers in a "render farm" that is used by animators to produce the individual images and scenes that eventually become a movie. Shipping high-resolution images back and forth to animators consumes huge amounts of memory, said Mr Mahe. In 2007 the total amount of memory used while Illumination worked on its Dragon Hunters movie peaked at about 12 terabytes, he said. This grew substantially by the time Illumination made Despicable Me 2 when peak memory use hit 680 terabytes.

Hackers exploit NFC phone payment technology

Several bugs in Near Field Communication (NFC) payment systems have been found by security experts.

NFC allows people to pay for goods and services by touching their handset to a payment terminal. But the inclusion of the technology on phones has proved useful to hackers seeking a stealthy way to take over a mobile phone. In most cases the bugs would give an attacker complete access to a device's data.

The security experts demonstrated the weaknesses in NFC technology at an event in Tokyo organised by Hewlett Packard. Called Mobile Pwn2Own the competition involves researchers and developers using bugs in an attempt to subvert a series of handsets. A prize pool of $425,000 (£271,000) was available to those who managed to get access to a handset's innards via a bug they had found.

Entrants would get a slice of that cash by taking less than 30 minutes to carry out a successful attack via a previously unknown vulnerability.

Big Brother

US government planes collecting phone data? Devices that gather data from millions of mobile phones are being flown over the US by the government, according to the Wall Street Journal. The "dirtbox" devices mimic mobile phone tower transmissions, and handsets transmit back their location and unique identity data, the report claims. While they are used to track specific suspects, all mobile devices in the area will respond to the signal. The US Justice Department refused to confirm or deny the report.

Brazen - a Frozen Parody by Steam Traction World

No one can deny the appeal of Frozen throughout 2014 with Disney Frozen toys set to be some of the biggest sellers this Christmas. Steam Traction World have launched their Christmas campaign called Brazen - a wonderfully witty take on a 'typical day at the office'

Parodies are nothing new with Steam Traction World taking on the John Lewis advert the Bear and the Hare last year with their own delicious twist. Which will triumph? Brazen had over 2,500 views on Facebook within the initial 24 hours of launch and has been presented earlier - one day before the John Lewis Monty the Penguin advert of this year, and a whole month earlier than the STW Bear and Hare of last Christmas.

Christmas at Steam Traction World

Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without warm mince pies, mulled wine, novelty knitware and the festive feast which is Steam Traction World's video/presentation.

Shrouded in secrecy, this year has seen not hints, links or anything that could give the game away to the theme for 2014.

Who could forget the Bear and the Hare parody from last year, and the up tempo version of 'Walking in the Air' the year before, and well known Christmas songs played on er.. of all things - elastic bands the year before that? One thing is for certain, each year has got better and better.

From last years offering it was decided an earlier launch date for this Christmas, with an expected premiere aired on 8th November. Insiders say it could be launched to coincide with the X-Factor TV show on the Saturday during a segway between Dermot O'Leary and Simon Cowell. The X Factor itself is Hallowe'en week however we are sure there will be nothing spooky about the coincidence of Steam Traction World's launch during the popular TV show.

Dean Rogers, Director at Steam Traction World had this to say, "We learnt a lot last year with Bear and the Hare, and we knew we should try to launch this year earlier. The presentation will be on Steam Traction World's Youtube channel and we have included a few surprises that, we hope, everyone will enjoy. The theme? Well, we are keeping it under wraps until the launch but what I can say it will be instantly recognisable within the first few seconds."

Whistling Billy - White Steam Car

Whistling Billy must have been a sight to see in its heyday travelling throughout the country racing on the dirt trotting–horse tracks. Here Whistling Billy is seen with the original driver Webb Jay seated in it in 1905.
Whistling Billy
Whistling Billy

In winter 1904/05 the White company built a steam works sprint car for the popular new motor racing on the dirt trotting horse tracks throughout North America. Many of these were one mile ovals so owners could compare any trotting horse across America on time over one mile.

The car was called The White Flyer but soon it was renamed by the crowds “Whistling Billy” because of the howl that it made from its burners going down the straights. (The names and most of the pictures come from newspaper reports of the time –Whistling Billy is known sometimes during its racing career as “The White Flyer” but usually the former).

Nick Price Creatives was commissioned to create a new page featuring Whistling Billy to the SCCGB (Steam Car Club of Great Britain) website. NPC had worked on the huge 1,000 page website previously, designing the new look a couple of years ago and, due to the amount of images, history, video and information available on the old racer, came up with four fantastic pages unique (and fitting) to Whistling Billy within the site.

Wheeler Dealer - Mike Brewer Lamborghini Urraco

Wheeler Dealer - Mike Brewer Lamborghini Urraco

Wheeler Dealer Mike Brewer asked Circuit2Circuit to collect a Lamborghini Urraco from Poland - the car had been in a barn and was last driven 6 years ago. The collection was filmed and featured as part of the program first aired on the Discovery Channel in 2013.

An added challenge were the brakes - they were seized. The car could not be started so it was up to Circuit2Circuit to get the car moved from its storage corner to the trailer. Once loaded it was the long drive back to the UK.
